BORN ON THE BAY: BERKELEY REP'S THE FAR COUNTRY |
Following a critically acclaimed debut in New York, Pulitzer Prize finalist Lloyd Suh brings The Far Country back to its roots for a West Coast premiere at the Berkeley Repertory Theater. In the wake of the Chinese Exclusion Act, Moon Gyet has arrived at San Francisco Bay’s Angel Island Immigration Station with an invented biography and a new name, both given to him by a man who made the same arduous crossing several years earlier. But passage to San Francisco — and the dream of a better life for future generations — commands a very high price. Staged at Berkeley Rep's intimate Peet's Theatre, playwright Lloyd Suh and director Jennifer Chang’s play of immigration, identity, and memory has been called “Artful…an act, loving and sorrowful, of reclamation” by The New York Times. A very special event, AAPI Heritage Night, happens on Friday, March 29 in the Berkeley Rep's Narsai David Courtyard, with pre-show drinks and light bites from Dumpling Time starting at 6:45pm.

THE BREAKROOM BAR & BILLIARDS RACKS IT UP |
Downtown Berkeley has a new place to play, The BreakRoom Bar & Billiards. With a dozen full-size pool tables and two full bars with kitchen, The BreakRoom opens daily at 4pm. We all know pool is fun; it also engages the strategic, problem-solving side of your mind. Albert Einstein was an aficionado and credited with saying, "There are six-million shots in the game of pool." Plan to visit The BreakRoom soon, for as Einstein also noted, "Billiards is the well-developed Art of thinking ahead."

Southwest Berkeley Mural by Hooman Khalili |
WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH: NOTES AND NOTABLES |
Visit Berkeley is proud to acknowledge Women’s History and Empowerment Month. The theme for 2024, “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion,” honors the historical contributions of women as well as empowering women and reducing barriers to their advancement. The mural pictured above was recently unveiled in Southwest Berkeley on Derby Street at the corner of San Pablo Avenue. The work, by artist Hooman Khalili, is dedicated to the Iran-based Woman, Life, Freedom movement. According to Berkeley City Councillor Sophie Hahn, "Despite a horrific crackdown that resulted in the arrests of more than 20,000 and the killings of more than 500 protesters in Iran, the Woman, Life, Freedom movement has lived on to touch every aspect of Iranian society, and inspires women across the globe, including right here in Berkeley." Another Berkeley history maker: Julia Morgan, engineer, architect and designer of the Berkeley City Club. Ms. Morgan's achievements are legion and include: Civil Engineering degree from UC Berkeley, 1894; Master's degree in architecture from Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, 1901 (the first woman admitted to the prestigious school); and designer of more than 700 buildings including Hearst Castle in San Simeon.
