BERKELEY'S TRAVEL ROOTS RUN DEEP |
Berkeley has an enduring legacy in outdoor conservation and recreation. After all, Berkeley native David Brower is noted by many to be the father of the modern environmental movement. Brower was the first executive director of the Sierra Club before founding Friends of the Earth and Earth Island Institute. Downtown Berkeley's David Brower Center is one of California's greenest buildings and has a section devoted to its namesake eco-pioneer. Today, two Berkeley companies are industry leaders for their outdoor tour adventures and featured in Berkeleyside's ‘Oh, the places you’ll go!’ with Berkeley’s Wilderness Travel and Backroads. The piece shares how both travel companies were founded in the 1970s by young adventurers with little business experience — and both are keeping business in the family, even as the companies adapt, evolve, and grow. BERKELEY REP'S SCINTILLATING SEASON |
The 2023/24 season at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre has sizzled with star performances, and the final three shows of the season promise to continue the theme. The Far Country by Pulitzer Prize finalist Lloyd Suh and directed by Jennifer Chang opens March 8. The play is set at the Angel Island immigration Station in the San Francisco bay in the wake of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Next up is four-time Tony Award nominee Raúl Esparza starring as the famous astronomer in the Broadway-aimed world-premiere of Galileo, a musical directed by Tony Award-winner Michael Mayer (American Idiot). Galileo opens May 5. Closing out the season is Mother Road, written by Octavio Solis -- one of the most celebrated writers of the Mexican-American cultural experience -- and directed by Berkeley Rep's own David Mendizábal. Solis' 21st-century tale, inspired by John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, captures the intersection of people, cultures, and migration in the American West. Opening June 14 at Berkeley Rep's intimate Peet's Theatre. Secure your seats today online, or call 510-647-2949, Tue-Sun, noon-7pm.
