Margaret Wilson, Aberdeen Gardens
Hampton native Margaret Wilson helps to preserve the legacy of the historic Aberdeen Gardens. Wilson was raised in this booming neighborhood. Aberdeen Gardens began as the first New Deal Planned Resettlement Community for African Americans under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Subsistence Homestead Project during the 1930s. This community is the only one of its kind that's still intact.
Wilson leads tours at the Aberdeen Gardens Historic Museum. She proudly takes visitors on a profound trip down memory lane. The museum, which has undergone recent renovations, is one of the original 158 homes built in the community. Wilson is the president of the Historical Foundation of Aberdeen Gardens, Inc. which recently released a documentary about the community.
