October 2020 Fort Monroe Opens Doors to Visitor & Education Center Fort Monroe now has more things to do than ever before! The Fort Monroe Visitor & Education Center has officially opened to the public providing visitors with a point of arrival and orientation to the significant historical and recreational amenities of Fort Monroe. The building was originally built as an Army Library in 1909. It was gutted, remodeled, and renovated and now complements the existing Casemate Museum. The Center also features exhibits that include the first African Landing in 1619 story and the Contraband Camp at Fort Monroe, which housed escaped enslaved people through the period of the Civil War. Both the Visitor & Education Center and the Casemate museum are open Thursday through Saturday from 10a.m. to 3p.m. Quench Your Thirst with a Match Made in Hampton! Two local businesses in Hampton have teamed up for an amazing collaboration that your tastes buds just have to try. The Fort Monroe Ghost Walk is returning, and this year guests are in for new tricks and treats. When purchasing a ticket guests will select which path they would like to take as they explore the fort. If you’re looking for a treat, enjoy the daytime, self-led program that will allow you to move at your own pace while seeing locations and learning the history.
