Commemorate the Contraband Decision in Hampton |
On May 24, 1861, three local enslaved men Frank Baker, Shepard Mallory and James Townsend fled to Fort Monroe and requested asylum. Their actions inspired General Butler to grant them sanctuary. As a result, Fort Monroe and Hampton became a haven for thousands of runaways in their fight for self-emancipation.
On May 24 at 7 p.m. at the historic Chapel of the Centurion at Fort Monroe, the Contraband Historical Society will host an event honoring this historic moment. This program will also be available virtually. Register here.

Cody Latpakdy, Assistant Manager, Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center |
May is Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. The contributions of this community help to make Hampton a more vibrant place to live, work and play. Cody Latpakdy is of Laotian descent and is the first generation of his family born in the United States. Growing up, his family was very supportive of his passion for the arts. Art program opportunities through Hampton City Schools helped Cody to cultivate his creativity.
"Hampton has always cherished and fostered its citizens in the same ways my family cares for one another. Working with Hampton Coliseum/Hampton Arts, I’ve never felt more at home," Said Latpakdy.
